The scouts of Leptothorax Albipennis are known to assess the size and the quality of rock crevices during their search for a new nest. These scouts tend to make more than one visit to a potential nest site and can reliably reject nests that are smaller or larger than their preferred nest size. Despite their small perceptual range, the accuracy of their size assessment is rather mind boggling.

In this research track, we have two goals:

  1. model and test the possible space assessment hypothesis of ants,
  2. analyze and develop space assessment strategies inspired from ants to mobile robots.
